How come I had to read another essay about white privilege in order to really get it. That being a “white feminist” adds another layer to the contradictions and complexities of FEMINISM. Feminist Contradiction #1: I’m empowering women by embracing the feminine/what makes us women, while simultaneously rejecting what makes us women with universal equality as the ultimate goal. Feminist Contradiction #2: WHITE feminism- If you haven’t already, read “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” by Peggy McIntosh… now connect that to feminism. Yikes. I know that McIntosh wrote that essay by relating male privilege to white privilege, but as a WHITE feminist, I’m stuck in the middle of the battle, fighting the very power structure that empowers me to challenge its own power. I’m “enjoying” my white privilege, while simultaneously fighting male privilege? Sounds like a twisted “have your own cake and eat it too” scenario. Is baking a new cake an option?
